Let’s Learn About Vegan Cheese
The words “vegan” and “cheese” aren’t usually ones that go together considering where cheese comes from (milk!). Vegan cheese may never compare as a direct replacement for cheese, what’s the reason to compare anyway? Like FDR aid, “comparison is the thief of joy.”
Vegan cheese can add unique flavors and textures to your dishes, and are crucial for dishes like pizza or nachos. To love it, you must first understand it, so here’s your Vegan Cheese Master Class.
Why Go With Vegan Cheese
Milk products go against the vegan way. When you think about who milk is meant for (the animal’s young), it’s totally unnatural for us to be drinking milk products.
There’s a popular myth that cows will be uncomfortable, or die if they aren’t milked, but this isn’t true. Cows only produce milk after giving birth. In factory farms, cows are artificially inseminated and pumped with hormones to increase milk production. You’re not only drinking milk, you’re practically drinking all the unnatural hormones pumped into that cow. Once the cows can’t be inseminated and produce milk anymore, they become your burger patty. What a life, right?
How is Vegan Cheese made?
Vegan cheese can be made from ingredients like the following:
- Soy protein
- Solidified vegetable oil
- Nutritional yeast
- Vegetable glycerin
- Tapioca flour
- Natural enzymes
- Pea protein
Although veganism usually associated with great health food, many vegan cheeses can be highly processed, so like typical cheese, eat it in small portions.
Is there fancy vegan cheese?
Sky is the limit with vegan cheeses. Companies like Daiya have complex flavors like jalapeno havarti, and smoked gouda. New companies are getting into the vegan cheese game all the time too.
